近年盛り上がりを見せるオランダのインディーシーンからPriceに単独インタビュー。昨年リリースされたアルバムやオランダのインディーシーン、コロナ禍の中の彼らについて伺いました。

An exclusive interview with Price from the dutch indie scene where getting hot over the past few years. We asked about their first album which is released last year, dutch indie scene and situation under COVID.

Please tell us how the band started.

Marnix: Price came together about three years ago. I had been playing in multiple bands and had my solo project on the side but noticed that I was stockpiling song ideas that weren’t really fitting with any of my current projects. So I got some friends together and we formed Price to see if we could create a vessel for those ideas.

バンドが始まった経緯について教えてください。

Marnix: Priceは約3年前に結成したんだ。それまで複数のバンドで活動していて、その傍らでソロプロジェクトもやっていたんだけど、どのプロジェクトにも当てはまらない曲のアイデアを溜め込んでいることに気づいたんだ。そこで、それらのアイデアを形にすることができないかと友人たちを集めてPriceを結成したんだ。

Your songs sound like garage rock. How did you get influenced by the genre, and which bands or artists do you think affected the most in your songwriting process?

Marnix: I began playing guitar around the same time this sort of garage resurgence happened around the world. Which resonated with my inability to play and write complex material. I think in the earlier days I definitely gravitated towards bands like Thee oh Sees, Reatards, The Gories or The Cramps because those were the songs I’d try to figure out how to play. Later on, when my playing improved, I dug a little deeper into the older stuff that influenced a lot of those bands, and that shaped my songwriting a little more.

君たちの音楽はガレージロックに影響を受けてるみたいだけど、どのようにそのジャンルに影響されたのですか？そして作曲において最も影響を与えていると思うアーティストは誰ですか？

Marnix: 僕がギターを弾き始めたのは、世界的にガレージが復活した頃だった。これは、複雑な曲を演奏したり書いたりするのが苦手な僕にとってベストだったね。若い頃は、Thee oh Sees、Reartards、The Gories、The Crampsといったバンドに惹かれていたよ。だって、その曲はどうやって演奏しようかよく考えていたからね。その後、自分の演奏が上達したときに、それらのバンドに影響を与えた昔の作品を少しずつ掘り下げていき、それが自分のソングライティングを少しずつ形成したんだ。

Please tell us your favorite albums.

Marnix: My absolute number one record is Piper At The Gates Of Dawn by Pink Floyd. From the strange roomy sounds to the usage of vocals as instruments, it’s a record that will sound different any time you listen to it.

お気に入りのアルバムを教えてください。

Marnix: 僕にとっての究極の1枚はPink FloydのPiper At The Gates Of Dawnだね。奇妙な部屋のような音や、ボーカルを楽器のように使うなど、いつ聴いても違う音がするお気に入りのアルバムだよ。

Please tell us some BTS of the recording of “Timesaver”.

Marnix: We recorded the record in May, 2019 in an abandoned office building where Leon was living at the time. The nicest part about this was that we weren’t on any tight studio schedule and could tinker away at the record as much as we wanted. Which in turn is probably why it’s become such a dense sounding record. Another fun fact is that we recorded a lot of things in the big open marble hall, like the drums on Manic Beat or the guitar and vocals on the title track, which a beautiful natural reverb.

“Timesaver”の制作背景について教えてください。

Marnix: 2019年5月に、当時レオンが住んでいた廃墟のようなオフィスビルでレコーディングしたんだ。スタジオのタイトなスケジュールに縛られることなく、好きなだけ音源をいじることができたのが良かったね。だからこそ、このような濃密なサウンドになったんだと思う。Manic Beat (アルバム収録曲) のドラムや、タイトル曲 (Timesaver) のギターとボーカルみたいに、自然なリバーブがかかった美しいサウンドを大きな大理石のホールで沢山録音したことも楽しかったね。

Do you have any connections with other bands? Seems you’re connected with Pip Blom and Personal Trainer?

Marnix: I’ve played with Personal Trainer a few times. Mostly because of the collaborative record we recorded as ’The Industry’. A lot of people from the dutch music scene were there to record some songs, Pip Blom, Steve French, Arie from Lewsberg and so forth. But the dutch scene is relatively small so I think most people know each other fairly well.

繋がりがあるバンドはいますか？Pip BlomやPersonal Trainerとは親交があるみたいだけど？

Marnix: Personal Trainerとは何度か共演したことはあるんだ。主に “The Industry” の録音のためにコラボレーションをしたね。Pip Blom、Steve French、LewsbergのArieなどオランダの音楽シーンから多くの人がレコーディングに参加していたよ。でも、オランダの音楽シーンは比較的小さいから、ほとんどの人がお互いによく知っていると思う。

With ongoing situation of COVID, what do you think is the role of music and bands that are out there?

Marnix: I think it’s getting harder for bands to reach their audience. With shows being cancelled left and right it’s really just down to releasing music and live streaming, which can get pretty tiresome. I think the main role of music is to connect and invigorate people, but as of right now, we don’t have the means to do that.

現在のコロナ状況を踏まえて、音楽と今現在も活動しているバンドの役割についてどう考えているか教えてください。

Marnix: バンドが観客と同じ空間を共有するのは難しくなっていると思う。ライヴが次々とキャンセルされる中で、新曲をリリースしたり、ライヴ・ストリーミングをしたりするのはとても面倒だと感じているよ。音楽の本来の役割は人と人を繋ぎ、元気にすることだと思うんだけど、今の僕たちにはその手段がないんだ。

What did you do during the lockdown?

Marnix: When our first lockdown started in The Netherlands I recorded some solo material that I had lying around which was a nice way to escape the monotony that was introduced in our lives. After the restrictions got loosened we started working on new material with Price. I’m happy to say we’ve written about an albums worth of songs and ideas.

ロックダウンの間何をしていましたか？

Marnix: オランダで最初のロックダウンが始まったとき僕は手持ちのソロ曲を録音したんだけど、コロナによって退屈になった生活から逃れるためには良い方法だったね。制限が緩和された後は、Priceと一緒に新しい曲を作り始めたんだ。嬉しいことに、アルバム1枚分の曲とアイデアができたんだ。

Lastly, do you have any plans for this year? If any, please tell us.

Marnix: We’re planning on recording our second record as soon as possible. This time going for a more hands on approach and doing most of the recording ourselves in our analog studio. Also when shows are possible again we still have to celebrate the release of Timesaver, with a little delay, but it’ll be a celebration nonetheless.

最後に、今年の予定を教えてください。

Marnix: 僕たちは、できるだけ早く2枚目のアルバムをレコーディングする予定なんだ。今回はより実践的なアプローチで、アナログスタジオでほとんどのレコーディングを自分たちで行う予定だよ。また、ライヴが可能になったら、”Timesaver”のリリースを祝わなければいけないね。少し遅れてるけど、それでも祝うよ！

オランダ発の4人組ポスト・ガレージパンクバンド。デビューアルバム「Timesaver」ではサイケ・オルタナ・ガレージロックなど多様なジャンルを取り入れ、近年のダッチシーンの革新的側面が垣間見える作品に仕上げた。同じくオランダ出身のバンドPersonal TrainerやGlobal Charming、Lewsbergらとの対バン経歴があり、イギリス同様にインディーコミュニティーの確立に大きな貢献をしているバンドの一つ。ガレージに重心を置いたスタイルは西海岸のバンドとも共鳴する。
