Interview – DEAFDEAFDEAF

マンチェスターから新たに登場したハードコアポストパンクバンド DEAFDEAFDEAF。ユースフルででありながら硬派スタイルを貫く彼らの魅力に迫る。

Please tell us how the band started.

Nathan (Vocals), Ellis (Bass) and the band’s original guitarist started the band in college, Ellis had only picked up a Bass that very day. It was just us getting together and ‘having a go’ and eventually it expanded and here we are.

バンドがどのように始まったか教えてください。

ボーカルのNathanとベースのEllis、そしてバンド初期のギタリストで大学で始めたんだ。Ellisはその日にベースを手にしたばかりで、ただ集まって「やってみよう」ってなってから最終的に広がって今に至ったんだ。

How did you come up with the name of the band?

That remains a secret.

バンドの名前はどのように思いついたのですか？

それはまだ内緒だね。

I feel the dark post punk influences like Murder Capital in your music, but also feel something special that no other band have. If you were to describe your music, how would you do it?

This is something we’ve been debating between ourselves for a while. We’re industry labelled as ‘Post-Punk’ similar to the likes of Murder Capital etc but I don’t think we’re bound by most of the genre’s tropes, we like to implement elements of Shoegaze, Noise and I’d say we’re more traditionally minded in song structure than most modern post-punk contemporaries. We don’t try and add in different time signatures, breakdowns ect if they aren’t needed, slightly alt-rock minded in that sense.

あなた達の音楽からは Murder Capital のようなダークポストパンクの影響も感じますが、他のそのようなバンドたちともどこか違うような気がします。あなた達の音楽を言い表すとしたらどのようなものでしょうか？

それは自分たちの間でもしばらく議論してたことでもあるんだ。業界的には Murder Capital のように「ポストパンク」と称されているけど、このジャンルのほとんどには自分たちは属されていないと思うんだ。シューゲイズやノイズの要素を取り入れることも好きだし、曲の構成においては同世代のポストパンクよりも、伝統的な考え方をしていると言えるね。異なった拍子やブレイクダウンなどは必要でなければトライはしないし、そう言った意味ではオルタナティブロックな考え方だね。

Tell us the process of your music production.

We record mostly at The Nave in Leeds with Matt Peel & Alex Greaves. We’ll sit down with them and bring in a song we’ve written but we’re certain to keep an open mind. Songs can change completely or not at all when we go in, either way we’re guaranteed to be experimenting with pedals and any other bits of noise we can add to flesh out tracks with atmosphere as much as possible.

ほとんどはリーズにあるThe NaveというスタジオでMatt PeelとAlex Greavesとと僕らでレコーディングしているんだ。彼らと一緒に座って、自分たちが作った曲を持ってくるんだけど常にオープンな姿勢でいるように心がけている。曲が完全に変わることもあれば全く変わらないこともあるんだけど、どっちにしろ可能な限り雰囲気のあるトラックを肉付けするために、いろんなペダルやその他の加えられるだけのノイズを試すんだ。

The music video for your latest song, “City Song”, is so cool. Please tell us your inspiration behind the video.

The idea was discussed almost as soon as we went into the studio to record. We wanted to work with Felix & Danny again after the amazing work they did for the “Odes” Music Video. Ellis took a day to record a bunch of the imposed shots of the city you see over Felix’s performance . It just fits so well with the song but recording and using footage in Manchester was important for this one.

For all our work we prefer the pieces surrounding our Music to be as collaborative as possible rather than it be just our limited vision. We let Felix and Danny ha２３ve their creative freedom when they go to work on the song, they express their emotions via performance. If we were to stand behind the camera and direct it’d lose a lot of what makes that video and the ‘Odes’ video beautiful. 

最新曲”City Song”のミュージックビデオがとてもカッコよかったです。ビデオに制作過程についてのアイデアなどがあったなら教えてください。

このビデオのアイデアはレコーディングスタジオに入ってからすぐに話し合ったんだ。シングル”Odes”のミュージックビデオで素晴らしい仕事をしてくれたFelix & Dannyとまた一緒に仕事をしたかったんだ。Ellis(Bass)はビデオでFelixのパフォーマンス越しに写されるマンチェスターの街の風景を1日かけて撮影したんだ。この曲との相性は最高だけど、マンチェスターの街を映し出すことがこの曲においては大切だったんだ。

全ての制作において、限られたビジョンだけでなく可能な限り音楽とその周りにあるもの全ての要素が混ざり合うようにしたいんだ。僕たちはFelixとDannyにはパフォーマンスを通じて感情を表現してもらうために、クリエティブな面においては自由に任せたんだ。もし僕らがカメラの後ろに立って監督をやっても “City Song” や “Odes” のような美しいビデオは撮ることはできなかっただろう。

ー Their need to not be staring at the same grey buildings you see on every square mile of Manchester ー

In Manchester, where you live have a great musical history, and is a city people all over the world are pay attention to. What do you think makes Manchester different from other regions?

The North of England in general is a place like no other. It’s hard to say exactly why Manchester is so renowned for Music and Culture but it’s probably something to do with Working Class people and their need to not be staring at the same grey buildings you see on every square mile of Manchester.

あなた達が住んでいるマンチェスターには偉大な音楽の歴史があり、世界中の人々が注目しています。何が他の地域と比べてマンチェスターを特別な街にしているのでしょうか？

イングランド北部は他に類を見ない場所なんだ。なぜマンチェスターが音楽とカルチャーにおいてこれほど有名かをはっきりということはできないけど、おそらくワーキングクラス(労働者階級）の人々が関係していると思う。彼らはマンチェスターの平方マイルごとに見られる同じグレーの建物から目を逸らす必要があるからね。

Please tell us some songs or albums you often listened to in your childhood and, who have influenced you the most?

Nathan : Not sure about Lyrically but I listened to a lot of old hardcore punk as a kid; Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks. I guess that influenced my energy and really opened my ears to most channels of alternative music.

Louis : Sonic Youth.

Connor : Nirvana, Dave Grohl’s drumming. Especially.

Ellis : Joy Division.

あなた達が幼少期に聴いていたアルバムや曲、また影響を及ぼしたアーティストを教えてください。

Nathan(Vocal) : 叙情的にはわからないけど、子供の頃は Bad Brains、Minor Threat、Circle Jerksなどの古いハードコア・パンクをよく聴いていた。これらのバンドが自分のエネルギーに影響したし、オルタナティブ・ミュージックのほとんどのチャンネルに耳を傾けるきっかけにもなったんだ。

Louis(Guitar) : Sonic Youth.

Connor(Drums) : Nirvanaの特に Dave Grohlのドラムだね。

Ellis(Bass) : Joy Division.

Do you have any bands, labels, or communities that you are interested in these days?

There’s a load of bands we’d love to shout out to be honest. Manchester and thereabouts based, NARA, Facades, Slap Rash, Pyncher. There’s a lot of great bands on or associated with ‘Disobedient Records’ too.

最近興味のあるバンドやレーベル、コミュニティなどがあれば教えてください。

正直言ってお勧めしたいバンドはたくさんあるよ。マンチェスターを拠点だとNARA、Facades、Slap Rash、Pyncherだね。Disobedient Recordsに所属あるいは関わっている素晴らしいバンドがたくさんあるんだ。

Manchester has some traditional football teams. Do you have favorite teams in Manchester or the Premier League?

Manchester United are the team. Jack supports Man City but he’s a red deep down. 

マンチェスターには偉大なフットボールチームがありますよね。マンチェスターあるいは他のプレミアリーグのチームでお気に入りはありますか？

マンチェスターユナイテッドだね。Jackはマンチェスターシティを応援しているけど、心の底は赤色に染まっているはずだよ。

Please tell us your plans for the future or any goals you have as a band.

For the meantime  we’re just looking to get our first ‘tour’ done, we’re about 4 dates deep right now and we’re just getting ready for a debut in Bristol, our first Netherlands show at Left of the Dial. 

Next year we’d like to get an E.P. done, that’s not saying we will do, there’s a lot of planning to go into it but that’d be a goal. Also, play some festivals if we can. 

バンドの目標や予定があれば教えてください。

今のところ、ファーストツアーを成功させたい。今はツアー4日目でブリストルでのデビュー公演とオランダでの初ライブに向けて準備しているんだ。

計画を立てる必要があるから絶対とは言い切れないけど来年はEPを出したいと考えていて、それが目標かな。あとはできるなら何個かフェスにも出演したいね。

イギリス、マンチェスター出身の四人組。Murder Capitalを彷彿させる疾走感あふれるダークなポストパンクにシューゲイズやノイズ、Bad Brainのようなハードコアパンクなど幅広い要素を取り入れたサウンドを鳴らす彼らの音楽。確立した硬派な世界観とDIY精神は音楽以外にも現れておりMVやライブパフォーマンスを通じ観るものに強力なインパクトを残す。すでにイギリス国内ツアーも行っている最中であり、ブリストルでのRough Tradeのライブやオランダでの公演も控えるなど活躍の場をさらに広げている。
