Interview – Holm Front Records

イギリスはロンドンのギターロックバンドSports Teamが立ち上げたレーベルHolm Front Recordsにインタビュー。レーベルの中心人物Henryに立ち上げの経緯から今注目のバンドまでたっぷりうかがいました。

An exclusive interview with Holm Front Records, a label established by UK band Sports Team. We asked Henry about everything from how they started the label to what bands are hot right now.

Please tell us how and why you started this label.

We started the label as a means to physically release Sports Team material, putting out seven-inch singles of tracks like Margate, Kutcher and Get Along in the early days of the band. A 12-inch EP called Keep Walking followed, and gradually it has grown into something which incorporates other artists from around the world. In the early days, it was about having autonomy and control about the release of our own music. Now that the label has existed for multiple years and has a platform, however small, we want to use that to promote other artists we love.

なぜ、そしてどのようにしてこのレーベルを立ち上げたか教えてください。

僕らはSports Teamの音楽をフィジカルでリリースするためにこのレーベルを始めたんだ。バンドの最初期には”Margate”、”Kutcher”、”Get Along”を出したよ。12インチで出した「Keep Walking EP」はのちに世界中の他のアーティストたちを僕らの活動に取り込むきっかけにもなったね。こうしてレーベルが数年間活動を進めていく中で、きちんとしたプラットホームを持った今、それがたとえ小さかろうと、僕らはそれを僕らが大好きなアーティストたちをプロモートするために使っていきたいね。

How do you find and reach out to new bands? (Personal Trainer is a Dutch group, Maxband is a band from NY)

The method of finding and reaching out to bands changes from one release to another. Often, that initial contact comes in the live environment. For example, in the case of Personal Trainer, we were in Amsterdam playing a secret Sports Team show with Pip Blom at Helicopter Studios. Opening proceedings was a band I’d never heard of. Within minutes of them launching into their opening song, we’d all turned to one another excitedly and said: “we have to sign this band.” That band was Personal Trainer. That track, The Lazer, ended up being the first single we put out. Very excited to be putting out a five-track EP by them this week!

Other times, I might hear something that catches my attention online and reach out to the artist informally to see if they’d be interested in working with us on a physical release. After hearing the single Cut It Loose, that was the way things worked out with Maxband.

君たちはどのようにして新しいバンドを見つけて彼らとコンタクトをとっているのかな？(Personal Trainerはオランダのグループ、MaxbandはNYのバンドだよね？)

バンドへのコンタクトの取り方はその都度異なるね。最初のコンタクトは「ライブ」を取り巻く環境が主かな。Personal Trainerの場合、僕ら(Sports Team)がアムステルダムでPip Blom(オランダのバンド)とシークレットギグをした時にオープニングアクトをしていて、その時は知らなかった。けどオープニング曲を演奏し始めてから僕らみんな釘付けになっちゃってさ、「これは彼らと契約しなきゃ！」ってなったんだよね。その時の曲”The Lazer”はのちに最初にリリースしたシングルになったんだ。そんな彼らがデビューEPを今週リリースするからとても楽しみだね！

それ以外の場合は僕がネットで興味をひくアーティストを見つけたら個人で連絡してみて、僕らと一緒にフィジカルでリリースするのに興味ないか聞いたりするね。”Cut It Loose”を聴いた後にMaxbandとはそんな感じで契約に至ったよ。

Do you have any connections with the music scene outside of UK? 

I chat to Willem from Personal Trainer a lot and he’s put me on to some great music from the Dutch indie scene (i.e. Global Charming, A Fungus, The Sweet Release of Death, The Klittens, Neighbours Burning Neighbours, Steve French). Many of the members of those bands actually play in Personal Trainer’s live shows. 

Stateside, Sports Team are signed to a label called Bright Antenna Records so we’ve got some good friends out there. In Japan, Tokyo’s Big Love Records have been big supporters of the label from day one, making Ugly’s Last Supper, Walt Disco’s Dancing Shoes and several Sports Team records their “Single of the Week.” Can’t wait to visit one day! 

UKの外の音楽シーンとは関わりはありますか？

よくPersonal TrainerのWillemと話すんだけど、彼のおかげでオランダの良い音楽には沢山触れさせてもらってるよ(Global Charming、A Fungus、etc.)。今挙げたバンドに在籍している多くのメンバーは実際にPersonal Trainerのライブでも演奏しているんだ。アメリカではBright Antenna Recordsと契約したこともあって、そこにも良い友達が多くいるよ。日本に関しては東京のBig Love Recordsがレーベルの立ち上げ時から良くしてくれてて、Uglyの”Last Supper”をはじめとした僕らのリリースを「Single of the Week」に掲げてくれてるね！いつか訪問するのが楽しみだな！

In the current UK music scene, are there any bands or acts you guys are keeping an eye on?

London four-piece Sunken have a really cool EP in the works. Holiday Ghosts, a band I know from my days growing up in Cornwall, just signed to Fat Cat Records and have a rockin Violent Femmes-esque album coming out soon. York’s Bull, who toured with Sports Team before the world turned upside down, have their Pavement-inflected debut Discover Effortless Living coming out on EMI in March. Martha Skye Murphy, who featured on Squid’s new single Narrator, has recently released some great EPs of her own – would recommend Yours Truly. Speedboat, two brothers with a penchant for the sounds and stylings of the 1980s, are also worth checking out!

今のイギリスの音楽シーンで君たちが注目しているバンドやアーティストは誰かいるかな？

ロンドンの4人組SunkenはめちゃくちゃカッコいいEPを出してるね。コーンウォール州で過ごしてた時からの知り合い、Holiday Ghostsはちょっと前にFat Cat Recordsにサインしたばかりで近々Violent Femmes(USのフォークパンクバンド)的テイストのアルバムを出すよ！僕らともツアーをしたヨーク州のBullはペイブメントの影響を感じるデビューアルバムをEMIから3月に出すね。Squidのシングル”Narrator”でもコラボしたMartha Skye MurphyもなかなかにカッコいいEPを出してるね – “Yours Truly”がおすすめ。80s色強めのサウンドとスタイルを追求する兄弟デュオSpeedboatもチェックしてみて！

What are some difficulties in balancing activities as a band, and work as a label?

At the moment the worldwide pandemic means we have a lot more time on our hands than might ordinarily be the case. Once touring resumes – soon, I hope! – the day-to-day tasks like shipping records and coordinating PR campaigns become more difficult. Thankfully it doesn’t feel too much like work when it’s something you’re passionate about.

バンド活動とレーベルの運営。この二つを両立する上で難しいと感じることはなんですか？

このパンデミックは僕らがもっと「自分たちに割く時間」を与えてくれているね。またツアーができるようになったら、今やっているデイリーの仕事、例えばレコードを発送したりPR活動を進めたりっていうのは難しくなるからね。幸い、好きなことを仕事にしているから、あまり「仕事」っていう感じは無いね！

Lastly, do you have any plans for this year? If any, please tell us (as far as you can tell).

There are few more Holm Front releases in the pipeline. We’re also currently working on a Sports Team project to tide people over until we put out the second album. Ben is drawing the cover artwork next to me as I type this. More info on that soon!

Ben says he admires your rich stories, particularly Neon Genesis Evangelion.

最後に、今年は何か予定は立っていますか？もしあれば是非教えてください！

今の時点でも既にいくつかHolm Frontからリリース予定のものが決まってるよ。加えて僕らはSports Teamとしてのプロジェクトも進めていて2ndアルバムを出すまでの間、みんなが楽しめるようなこと計画中だね。ちょうどこのインタビューを僕が答えている間に横でBenがカバーアートを描いてるよ！近々その詳細も出す予定！

日本の読者に向けて何かメッセージをください！

Robは日本での気候はここ、マーゲイトよりも良いと期待しているよ。Benは日本にある豊富な漫画やアニメのストーリーが大好きだってさ。特に「新世紀エヴァンゲリオン」。いつか日本に行って君たちのもとでライブができるといいな！
