昨年リリースされた7インチは即完売。The NME 100: Essential emerging artists for 2021にも選出された大注目のメルボルン出身、青春痛快パワーポップ・ガレージパンクバンドRomero。今年リリース予定のデビューアルバムを前に、彼らに曲のことや日本の印象などを聞きました。

We talked to the Melbourne-based thrilling power-pop, garage punk band Romero. Their 7″ released last year was sold out soon and they were selected as one of The NME 100: Essential emerging artists for 2021. Before the release of their first album, we asked them about their songs, their impressions of Japan, and more!

Please tell us how the band started.

Dave: So Adam, Murry and I (Dave) had just finished playing in another band and were a bit directionless until our good friend Josh O’Keefe convinced Adam to come out to a gig one night and meet his old friend Lana. When Adam and Lana met they instantly started talking about collaborating and trading song ideas, not really thinking of making a band out of it. When Adam showed me their songs I was blown away by Lana’s voice so I got involved, then Murry joined us and we had a few songs coming together, and not long after that we recruited the big sweetheart Ferg (we were already playing together in another band EYESØRES) to complete the puzzle.

バンドが始まった経緯について教えてください。

Dave: AdamとMurryと僕（Dave）は別のバンドでの活動を終えたばかりで方向性が定まらずにいたんだけど、親友のJoshがある夜のギグにアダムを誘って彼の旧友のLanaに会ったんだ。AdamとLanaが出会ったとき、彼らはすぐにコラボレーションの話を始め、曲のアイデアを交換した。その時はまだバンドを組むなんて考えてはいなかったね。でもAdamが彼らの曲を見せてくれた時、僕はLanaの声に圧倒されてしまって僕も参加することにしたんだ。そしたらMurryもバンドに参加して数曲がまとまってきたんだけど、その後すぐに大親友のFerg（僕らはすでにEYESØRESというバンドで一緒にプレイしていた）を誘ってパズルを完成させたんだ。

Do you have any connections with other bands?

Dave: Here in Melbourne there’s a huge community of awesome bands that we know of, some of our closest friends’ bands are Super-X, Future Suck, The Dolphins, Steel Wheels, and obviously EYESØRES is the closest family link to the band.

You bill yourselves as a power pop band. How did you get influenced by the genre, and which bands or artists do you think affected the most in your songwriting process?

Dave: Well to be honest we don’t fully see ourselves as a power pop band but there are plenty of classic bands in that genre that influence us – Big Star, Blondie, Cheap Trick, The Shivvers, Buzzcocks, Todd Rundgren, etc. We’re influenced by a wide range of music, each of us are into quite different stuff which means everyone brings a unique element to the songwriting. I think the main influences on our sound are first-wave punk and soul, but the full list of artists who influence us would be very, very long!

君たちは自分たちをパワーポップバンドと定義していたけど、そのジャンルにどのような影響を受けていますか。また、楽曲作成段階においてどのアーティストが最も影響を与えていると思いますか。

Dave: 実をいうと僕らは自分たちをパワーポップバンドだとは思っていないんだけど、Big Star、Blondie、Cheap Trick、The Shivvers、Buzzcocks、Todd Rundgrenなど、このジャンルに影響を受けているクラシックバンドはたくさんいるよ。僕たちは幅広いジャンルから影響を受けているんだ。メンバーそれぞれが全く違う音楽にハマっていて、それぞれが曲作りに独自の要素を持ってきているんだ。僕たちのサウンドが1番影響を受けているのは、ファーストウェイブのパンクとソウルだと思うけど、僕たちに影響を与えているアーティストのリストは非常に長くなると思うよ！

君たちのお気に入りのアルバムを教えてください！

Dave: Ramones – “Ramones”, Royal Headache – “High”, Misfits – “Static Age”, The Strokes – “Is This It?”, Television – “Marquee Moon”, Prince – “Dirty Mind”, Best Coast – “Crazy For You”, Girls – “Album”, Evans Pyramid – “Evans Pyramid (1978 – 1994)”, Creedence Clearwater Revival – “Green River”, Steely Dan – “Countdown to Ecstasy”.

You talked to NME about the BTS of “Troublemaker”. Please tell us some BTS of the recording of “Honey” and “Neapolitan”.

Dave: All three songs were recorded in September 2019 at Soundpark Studios which is where we have also recorded our upcoming album! It was exciting recording those songs because we had only just written them, so there was a lot of celebrating when we finished those early sessions, hearing ourselves properly recorded and mixed by our engineer Idge. We did 6 songs and it took us maybe 3 or 4 days to record and mix. Once we finished that recording session we didn’t really know what to do with the songs, I think we were planning on going back and recording more and just doing an album, but Cool Death reached out and gave us the amazing opportunity to put out the two songs as a 7”.

NMEのインタビューで最新シングル”Troublemaker”の背景について話していたけど、”Honey”と”Neapolitan”についても教えてください。

Dave: 3曲とも2019年9月にSoundpark Studiosでレコーディングされたんだけど、そこは僕らの次のアルバムもレコーディングしている場所なんだ！まだ曲を書いたばかりだったからレコーディングはとてもエキサイティングだったよ。最初のセッションが終わって、エンジニアのIdgeが自分たちのレコーディングとミックスを完璧に終えたのを聞いたときは、とても嬉しかったね。6曲を作って、レコーディングとミックスに3、4日かかったよ。でも一旦レコーディングが終わった後は、曲をどうしたらいいのか分からなかったんだ。スタジオに戻ってもっとレコーディングしてアルバムを作ろうと思っていたんだけど、Cool Death Recordsが連絡をくれて、2曲を7インチで出すという素晴らしい機会を与えてくれたんだ。

With the ongoing situation of COVID, what do you think is the role of music and bands that are out there?

Dave: Music will always be integral to survival, I think during lockdown that became really obvious, listening to music and finding new stuff or reconnecting with old favourites provided solace and helped keep spirits going. So that will never change, but I hope live music and touring can come back soon, especially for the people who work behind the scenes in those industries.

現在のコロナ状況を踏まえて、音楽と今現在も活動しているバンドの役割についてどう考えているか教えてください。

Dave: 音楽は生きていくうえで不可欠だし、このロックダウン中は特に顕著だったね。音楽を聴いて新しいものを見つけたり、昔のお気に入りの曲と再会したりすることが慰めになり、精神を健康に保つのに役立っていたと思うよ。それは決して変わることはないと思うけど、ライブやツアーが早く復活することを願っているよ。特にその裏方で働いている音楽業界の人々のためにもね。

What did you do during the “hard lockdown” in Australia?

Dave: A few of us were kept busy with work so that helped break the days up. Adam and I live together and there was a lot of video games, pool and movie screenings at our place, and we befriended the local magpies (native Australian birds). As a band we stayed in touch despite not being able to see each other, we spent a fair bit of time figuring out the Troublemaker release which was a good project to work on while our shows and recording sessions were cancelled. It definitely wasn’t a good time but we’re able to go out and see/play gigs now because of the hard lockdown, except for when cases come back like they did last week, then our shows get shut down again! Good times.

オーストラリアの「ハードロックダウン」中はどのように過ごしていましたか？

Dave: 僕たちの何人かは仕事で忙しくしていたから暇になることはなかったかな。Adamと僕は一緒に住んでいて、僕らの家では沢山のビデオゲームやプールで遊んだり映画を観たりしていて、僕らは地元のカササギ（オーストラリアに生息する鳥）と仲良くなったんだ。バンドとしては直接会うことはできなかったけど連絡は取り合っていたし、ライブやレコーディングがキャンセルされている間も、Troublemakerのリリースに向けてかなりの時間を費やしていたよ。確実にいい時間ではなかったけど、先週のように事件が再発してまたライブが中止になることを除けば、ハードロックダウンのおかげで今ではライブを見に行ったり演奏したりすることができるんだ。今は良い時間を過ごせているね。

Please tell us your plans for this year (as far as you can).

Dave: Yes we’re really trying to get this album out in the next couple of months so stayed tuned for that! We have some great shows here booked in March and April so hopefully things stay open and we can play those. We’re already writing new material so we will be recording again at some stage too.

今年の予定についてわかることがあれば教えてください。

Dave: そうだね、僕らはこれから数ヶ月の間にこのアルバムをリリースしようとしているんだ。楽しみにしていてね！3月と4月には素晴らしいライブがいくつか予定されているから、うまくいけばそれらのライブをやることができるだろうね。そしてすでに新しい曲を書いているから、またどこかの段階でレコーディングをする予定だよ。

Please give some messages to the readers in Japan!

Dave: We really want to come over to Japan once we’re able to!! We have seen a few Australian bands tour there recently and it looks like a really amazing place to play. Lana has been over there before and has very fond memories, she says she has special lyrics for our future shows there!

Dave: 行けるようになったら、ぜひ日本に行きたいと思っているよ！最近オーストラリアのバンドの日本ツアーをいくつか見たけど、本当に素晴らしい場所だと思うよ。Lanaは以前日本に行ったことがあって、とてもいい思い出があるんだ。日本ツアーのための特別な歌詞もあるらしいから楽しみにしておいてね！
