アイルランド出身、20年代最重要オルタナバンド、NewDadへ日本初独占インタビュー。先日リリースされたデビューEPや日本の印象、音楽的影響について聞きました。

First exclusive interview in Japan with Ireland’s most important alternative band of the 20’s, NewDad. We spoke to the band about their debut EP, their impressions of Japan, and their musical influence.

ーWe’re all massive fans of so many different artists from the 90sー

ー私たちは皆、90年代に活躍した多くのアーティストの大ファンなんだー

Please tell us how the band started. (How and why did you start making music in the current form?)

Áindle: We all met in school. Julie, Fiachra, and Áindle needed something to do for their final music exam and figured it would be easier to do something as a band rather than all do individual practicals. Sean was studying music production in college and would help us with our demos and after a few lineup changes, he became a permanent part of the band.

バンドがどのようにスタートしたのか教えてください。（今の活動形態に至った経緯）

Áindle: 僕たちは学校で出会ったんだ。Julie、Fiachra、Áindleの3人は音楽の最終試験のために何かをする必要があったんだけど、別々に何かをするよりもバンドとして何かをする方が簡単だと思ったんだ。Seanは、大学で音楽制作を学んでいて、僕たちのデモを手伝ってくれたりしたんだ。何度かメンバーが入れ替わった後、彼はバンドの一員として定着したんだ。

I feel the influences from the 90’s alternative scene in your songs. Are there any bands or artists that have affected your songwriting process?

Julie: Definitely! We’re all massive fans of so many different artists from the 90s! There were so many cool grungey shoegaze bands that have definitely influenced our sound a lot such as Chapterhouse, Lush, and Slowdive. Mazzy Star is another massive influence, among my swan and so tonight that I might see are two of my favorite albums, and the way Hope Sandoval writes vocal melodies and lyrics has inspired me a lot!

君たちの曲からは90’sオルタナシーンの影響が感じられるけど、楽曲制作において影響を受けているアーティストはいますか？

Julie: その通りだよ！私たちは皆、90年代に活躍した多くのアーティストの大ファンなんだ！Chapterhouse、Lush、Slowdiveなど、私たちのサウンドに大きな影響を与えたクールなグランジ系シューゲイザーバンドがたくさんその時代にはいたんだ。Mazzy starにも大きな影響を受けているね。”Among My Swan “と “So Tonight That I Might See “の2枚は私のお気に入りのアルバムで、Hope Sandovalのヴォーカル・メロディーや歌詞の書き方にも多くのインスピレーションを受けたね！

Please tell us the concept of your debut EP “Waves” and some BTS of the recording of it.

Julie: We didn’t have much of a concept going in to writing the EP honestly, the songs that are on waves were all just ones we were working on around the same time so they all melded together very well!!! We then noticed there was a bit of a sea theme but it wasn’t intentional:) we grew up in a seaside town and I guess you do tend to write about the things around you! 

We only had three days to record the EP so it was very intense but also a lot of fun! Working with Chris Ryan was great because he knew exactly what recording techniques we should try out because he understood our sound from working on our previous tracks with us:)

デビューEP、「Waves」のコンセプトとその制作背景を教えてください。

Julie: 正直なところ、このEPを作る上でコンセプトはあまりなかったんだ。でも、” Waves” に収録されている曲はすべて同時期に制作していたから、うまく混ざり合っているんだ！「海」というテーマがあるかもしれないと思ったけど、それをイメージしながら曲を作ったわけではないね（笑）。 私たちは海辺の町で育ったから、自分たちの周りにあるものについて書く傾向があるのかもしれないね！

このEPのレコーディングには3日間しか時間がなかったから、とても集中しなければならなかったけど、同時にとても楽しい時間だったよ！Chris Ryanと働けたのは素晴らしかったね。彼は私たちと過去に一緒に制作していて私たちのサウンドを理解していたので、どのようなレコーディングテクニックを私たちと試すべきかを的確に把握していたからね。

ーOne of the things I love about Irelands new music scene is how eclectic and varied it isー

ー今のアイルランドの音楽シーンの多彩さと多様性ー

Your debut EP is released from Fair Youth. However, there are not so much information about it. Please tell us some further details of the label.

Sean: Fair Youth was set up by our manager to release music through him! It is really great because it lets us say when and how we want to release our music. It keeps all the creative control with us, which we love. Our manager then works with AWAL to distribute our releases. The name Fair Youth comes from a character in Shakespeare’s sonnets.

デビューEPをFair Youthというレーベルからリリースしていましたが、そのレーベルについて詳しく教えてください。

Sean: Fair Youthは、僕たちのマネージャーが彼を通して曲をリリースするために立ち上げたものなんだ。僕たちがいつ、どのように曲をリリースしたいかを決めることができ、僕たちが好きなようにすべての創作活動をコントロールすることができるから、とても素晴らしいね。僕たちのマネージャーは、AWAL(girl in redやLauvの所属するレーベル)と協力して私たちのリリースを配信しているんだ。ちなみにFair Youthという名前は、シェイクスピアのソネットに出てくる人物からとっているんだ。

The music scene of Ireland is heating up. Do you have any connections with other bands?

Sean: Yeah, there’s loads of great music coming out of Ireland. Just in Galway, where we’re from, there’s ‘Turnstiles’, a great punk band, ‘Nerves’, a post-prog band, as well as loads of other folk artists, DJs and plenty more! We’re also friends with Dublin band ‘The Magazine Club’. One of the things I love about Irelands new music scene is how eclectic and varied it is. For years it was only really pop-rock bands that were becoming successful, but now it’s everything from punk to hip-hop!

アイルランドの音楽シーンは今盛り上がりを見せていますが、繋がりのあるバンドなどはいますか？

Sean: アイルランドでは素晴らしい音楽がたくさん生まれているよ。僕たちの出身地であるゴールウェイには、カッコいいパンクバンドの”Turnstiles”やポストプログレバンドの”Nerves”がいるし、その他にもフォークアーティストやDJなどがたくさんいるんだ！ゴールウェイだけではなく、ダブリンのバンド”The Magazine Club”とも親交があるよ。今のアイルランドの音楽シーンで僕が気に入っていることのひとつは、その多彩さと多様性なんだ。何年もの間、成功していたのはポップロックバンドだけだったけど、今ではパンクからヒップホップまであらゆるジャンルが成功しているんだ！

ーJapan is definitely our number one dream destinationー

ー日本は間違いなく僕たちが1番行きたい夢の場所だね。ー

What did you do during the lockdown?

Fiachra: We are all actually very lucky because we are all in the same bubble and that meant we were able to keep working and practicing together during the lockdown. We understood that we would never have time like that again to focus on our music and write songs so we really just leaned into that and practiced as much as we could! We had the guts of two different EPs written during lockdown so we think we used our time well!

ロックダウン中は何をしていましたか？

Fiachra: 幸運なことに、僕たちは同じバブル（その中で暮らすと安全と思われるエリアのこと）の中にいるので、ロックダウンの間も一緒に作業や練習を続けることができたんだ。僕たちは、ロックダウン中のような音楽や曲を作ることに集中する時間が再び来ることは二度とないと思っていたので、集中してできる限りの練習をしたね。ロックダウンの間に2つのEPを頑張って作ることができたので、時間を有効に使えたと思うよ。

Do you have any plans for this year? If you have any, please tell us as far as you can.

Áindle: The world as of right now is still a little uncertain but we are hoping to start gigging again as soon as we can. We have a tour of Ireland and the UK planned for November and to see it sell out so quickly has really motivated us to play more and more gigs in the future hopefully. We would also love to travel abroad and get to play worldwide to people who have supported our music. Japan is definitely our number one dream destination. We are also in the process of working on our second EP which we hope to release sometime this year. We can’t wait for people to hear it. If you liked the first you’ll love this one!

今年の予定はありますか？あれば可能な範囲で教えてください。

Áindle: 今はまだ世界中が不安定な状態だけど、できるだけ早くギグを再開したいと思っているよ。11月にはアイルランドとイギリスでのツアーを予定しているんだけど、あっという間にチケットがソールドアウトしたのを見て、今後ももっともっとライブをしたいと思うようになったね。また、海外を旅して、僕たちをサポートしてくださっている人たちのために、世界中で演奏したいと思っているよ。日本は間違いなく僕たちが1番行きたい夢の場所だね。今、2枚目のEPを制作中で今年中にリリースしたいと考えているんだ。早くみんなに聴いてもらいたいよ！1stを気に入ってくださった方は、きっとこの作品も気に入っていただけると思うよ！

Fiachra: We just want to say a huge thank you to everyone in Japan who has listened to our music and shown us support in any way! We still can’t believe our music is reaching so many countries so far from us and Japan has been a place that all of us want to visit in the future so we were blown away when we started getting messages of support from people from Japan and that support has meant so much to us! Arigatō!!! 🙂

アイルランド出身の4人組オルタナティブロックバンド。90年代に台頭したシューゲイズ〜ドリームポップの系譜を受け継ぎ、現代に鳴らす。淡く溶けるようなドリーミーな世界観と、時折見せる骨太なオルタナロックが見事に交差する。身体性を無に近づけた切ないサウンドに溺れる、今年最大級の新人バンド。
